The fashionista has claimed the stunning model “doesn’t really fit” the image
Tommy Hilfinger has sparked controversy after claiming Gigi Hadid doesn’t have the right body to wear his outfits – and has clarified his comments.
Despite the stunning blonde model being one of the faces of his empire, she was made to wear an oversized coat on the runway for his New York Fashion Week Show last June .
He previously told Yahoo Style: “Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin.’
“They put a red, white and blue poncho on her. It covered a lot of her body unfortunately, but it received millions of hits.”
Gigi’s fans have been outraged over the comments, and hit out on social media.
“Apparently Gigi Hadid was too fat and short to walk in Tommy Hilfinger’s show in 2015. I’m officially a potato,” quipped one user.
Another added: “If Gigi Hadid is too short and fat to walk in the Tommy Hilfiger fashion show, can I be too short and fat to walk in the Tommy Hilfiger show?”
However, he has now distanced himself from the comments and insisted he argued against the decision.
“The casting people put Gigi in the poncho and I wasn’t happy,” he explained.
“I was saying, ‘Don’t hide her body’. The suggestion that I thought she wasn’t thin enough upsets me to no end.”
